Financial Management Training Scheme

If you’re successful, you’ll be posted to one of Scotland’s Health Boards. You must be flexible and willing to work anywhere in Scotland.

As a successful candidate you will:
  • start on an annual salary of around £22,000, with generous pension support
  • be posted to a Scottish NHS Board for an initial period of three years, starting in summer 2012
  • be fully funded training to gain membership of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy
  • work alongside some of Scotland’s top NHS managers and clinicians

Here’s how it works:

Year 1 What you'll do
Orientation (three months) You’ll experience a range of NHS services in your host Board and across Scotland. You will start your studies with CIPFA, completing any foundation studies you need to progress your qualification.
First placement (approximately ten months) You’ll work in a real financial management post with a strong operational focus. You will gain an insight into how NHS finances are managed, and the contribution made by effective performance management.

Year 2 What you'll do
Audit & Assurance Placement (up to two months) Have the opportunity to develop your audit and assurance skills, working with both internal and external audit teams.
Second placement (ten months) You’ll develop your financial management post in your host Board, taking on more responsibility and getting an introduction to strategic management challenges.

Year 3 What you'll do
Third placement You’ll move into another financial management post in your host Board, taking on responsibility for people, resources and budgets.


The three years in-work training is designed to give you:
  • A broad knowledge of the NHS
  • Real management responsibilities
  • An opportunity to choose a specialist area of work and study.
  • The chance to work in various sections of the NHS experiencing the various challenges and rewards it brings

In addition you will participate in a range of development opportunities such as
  • Learning alongside clinical staff and finance managers in an action learning set
  • Personal coaching and mentoring
  • Attending master classes in human resources management, health information systems and product management
